What are split ends?
Split ends occur when the protective cuticle is destroyed at the end of your hair. The hair will then split into two or more strands.
How do split-ends occur?
Some of the many reasons include:
- Dying your hair frequently
- Using hair dryers or hair straighteners with a high heat setting
- Overexposure to the sun’s heat
- Excessive washing with certain shampoos
- Using too harsh of a comb or brush for your hair type
- Not having your hair cut in a long period of time
It's important to address the reason your split-ends occur so that you know how to avoid getting them.
Why should you care? When you have rough and damaged ends, your hair will look dull. But if you have strands that lie smoothly, then they will reflect more light and appear shinier.
Solution: Unfortunately split-ends can not actually be repaired. After your hair has split, there is no way to actually bind the strands back together. Once the damage has occurred, the best way to deal with it is by using scissors to cut the ends of your hair once every 3 or so weeks. But after your routine trim, here are some products from the drugstore you can use to prevent split-ends (they all cost under $13). You want to use a deep conditioner once a week to seal your hair cuticles.
